Miss Hanson has given the students a vocabulary science project. Some of the work has been done in class. The rest of the work needs to be completed at home. She passed out the directions to students yesterday. Here they are:

Vivid Vocabulary Requirements

I was given this word in class: ___________________
· I am to do the following by Friday, Feb. 2nd:
Write the word large at the top of the paper (at least 2 inches). Use a dictionary to write the definition under the word.
Color the word so it stands out (block letters work well).
Draw a picture showing a scene of what the word means (3-D pictures will get you more points – use scrap booking supplies, cotton balls, Popsicle sticks, construction paper, Cheerios, etc. to make it stand out)
Write a sentence using your vocabulary word ( On the bottom).
Practice saying your word, definition and sentence because you will need to make an oral presentation to the class.
You will have some class time on Thursday to work on it.
Bring your word in on Friday morning, ready to present it to the class.

**It is important to be neat, careful and try to be creative as you work on this project. It is always a good idea to discuss this with your family and you can get some help from them on this one. I encourage family participation for this project. The main idea is to build your vocabulary so you will learn new and interesting words.

How you will be scored:
v Definition (5 pts.)
v Sentence (5 pts.)
v Use of 3D (5 pts.)
v Creativity (5 pts.)
v Neatness (5 pts.)
v Total – 25 points

A lot of papers are coming home today including Thursday Thoughts. Please read, there is a lot of important information.

Homework:
reading 25 minutes
reading sheet--Due Friday
Heart project--Due Feb. 4th

Here are the instructions for the heart project:

Valentines Day is a time we can celebrate friendship and kindness. I thought a great way to do this would be a fun family art activity.

Within the confines of the heart outline students need to illustrate their vision of “What Friendship Looks Like to Me” using crayons, colored pencils, paint etc. On the reverse side students are asked to write a paragraph about their thoughts on friendship and how they can be a good friend to others. While I encourage working with your student, please put a majority of the responsibility on them. Once students are done, they will bring them back to class and share their heart and what they wrote.

These hearts are due Feb. 4th. If your student finishes before then they are welcome to bring them in.

This is a homework/ art grade. The hearts and paragraphs will be graded on neatness, thoughtfulness and personal best grammar and conventions.

Thank you,
Karrie Brown

Book orders are coming home today. I am unable to order online at this time. However, I am able to call in the order over the phone then use my credit card to pay for it. I would need you to make checks payable to me in order to do that. It will be faster than mailing the order and the checks. I assure you the checks will be safe and used for the purchase of the books you would like to order. There are some great books in these two orders. Great prices too!

Special Announcement:
Well….A few of you have asked or hinted or wanted to know. So, (drum roll please) I am 10 weeks pregnant. Since this is my second child, it’s getting hard to hide. I wanted to wait until I was a little farther along (just in case). I am due July 31st, unless this baby takes after its big sister. I was early with Abby. However, it should not effect your students school year. As of right now, I will only be taking September for maternity leave. This should still be ok for next year’s kids.

Coats:
Please make sure your little cherub brings a coat to school. The next two days are going to be arctic!

Remember to check the weather forcast and check for delays.

I am sorry the blog has not been updated this week. I have been out sick, and unable to update.

Today we had our spelling test. Many students missed quite a few words. Please make sure your student studies these words each day.

We have been watching this great video about the Oregon Trail. Ask your kids about what they have learned. Of course they will probably remember the gross stuff that happened. J

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great break. I am excited to get back into the swing of things!

Facebook:

I talked to the class today about requesting Miss Hanson or myself as a friend on Face book. I explained that we are not excepting them as friends because we need to have our boundaries. It’s not that we don’t like them or want to be friends; it’s just that boundaries need to be made. They all seemed to understand.

Writing:

This month is going to be busy in writing. We will be going through intensive test prep for the 4th grade state writing test. It is so important that your student does not miss any school unless of course they are sick. February is when we will be taking the test.

Social Studies:
We are continuing our study of the Oregon Trial this week. We will then move into Pioneers.

Science:
In a few weeks we will start a unit on habitats.
